How to Make a Minecraft Thumbnail (With Your Own Skin)
By the MCRender team · Updated · 6 min read
To make a Minecraft thumbnail, pose your own skin in 3D, add one big subject and two or three words of text on a 1280×720 canvas, then export a PNG.You can do all of it in the browser in MCRender's Thumbnail Editor, or start from one of the Minecraft thumbnails other creators made and swap in your skin.
Decide what the thumbnail sells
Before you open anything, write down the one moment the video builds to: the boss fight, the finished base, the day you nearly died. A thumbnail that tries to show the whole episode shows nothing at the size YouTube displays it. The best Minecraft thumbnails pair your character with that single thing and a reaction — scared, proud, shocked — that tells the viewer how to feel about it.
If you make a series, decide on a layout now and keep it. Same skin, similar pose and the same corner for the episode number make your uploads recognisable in the subscription feed. Series pages like 100 days, hardcore and survival show what each format usually needs.
Make it in the Thumbnail Editor
- 1
Open the Thumbnail Editor
Go to mcrender.net/thumbnails and start a design. The canvas is 1280×720, YouTube's thumbnail size. Sign in with Google or Discord to save it.
- 2
Add a backdrop
Open Backdrop for a Minecraft sky or scenery, or use Uploads to drop in a screenshot from your world. A simple, slightly blurred background keeps the focus on your character.
- 3
Add your player
In Assets › Mobs, add a Player. Type your Java or Bedrock username to load your skin onto the 3D character, then pose it: arms, legs, head and the camera angle.
- 4
Add the thing the video is about
Mobs, blocks, items and HUD pieces (hearts, hotbar, advancement toasts) are in the same Assets panel. Pick one big subject — the boss, the build, the rare item — rather than many small ones.
- 5
Write two or three words
Open Text and choose a Minecraft-style 3D title or a bold YouTube font. Keep it short: the video title already says the rest.
- 6
Export
Press the download button and pick PNG 720p (1280×720). That's the size YouTube recommends, and it stays under YouTube's 2 MB limit.
Putting your own skin on it
Your skin is what makes a thumbnail yours. In the editor, any Player layer takes a username: type yours and the skin loads onto the 3D model, including the outer layer (hats, jackets, sleeves). You can add several players, which is how SMP and duo thumbnails are made — type each person's username. To pose the character, select it and drag the limbs, or start from a preset pose and adjust.
Want only your character, posed, with a transparent background? The free pose maker renders your skin in thousands of community poses. For mobs and items on their own, the Minecraft PNG library has transparent renders of every mob.
The faster way: start from a template
Templates are finished thumbnails with the players and text left editable. Open one, type your username next to each player, change the words and download. Featured templates are free with an account. It's the quickest way to a thumbnail that already follows the rules in our guide to what makes a good Minecraft thumbnail.
Browse Minecraft thumbnailsExport and upload
Export PNG 720p for YouTube. In YouTube Studio, open your video, choose Thumbnail › Upload file and pick the PNG. Before you publish, check it at real size with the free YouTube thumbnail preview: it shows your thumbnail in the home feed, search results and on a phone, next to other Minecraft thumbnails.
Questions
- What app do people use to make Minecraft thumbnails?
- Many creators pose characters in Blender or Mine-imator and finish in Photoshop. MCRender does both steps in the browser: your skin posed in 3D, mobs, blocks and text on one canvas, with no software to install.
- Can I make a Minecraft thumbnail for free?
- Yes. Featured templates are free with an account, and the Thumbnail Editor is free for your first day (downloads are watermarked at 720p). Clean HD, 4K and layered PSD downloads are part of Creator ($19.99/month, with a 3-day free trial).
- Can I use my Bedrock skin?
- Yes. Type your Bedrock gamertag if you've joined a Geyser server, or upload your skin file (a 64×64 PNG). Slim and classic arms both work.
- What size should a Minecraft thumbnail be?
- 1280×720 pixels (16:9), under 2 MB, as a JPG or PNG. Shorts use a vertical 9:16 frame; the editor can keep a Shorts size alongside the YouTube one in the same design.
- How do I make a Minecraft thumbnail on my phone?
- The same editor works in Safari or Chrome on a phone. See the step-by-step mobile guide for where each tool lives on a small screen.
