Horror thumbnails sell dread. The formula that works in Minecraft is a frightened character in the foreground and something wrong just behind them — a figure in the fog, eyes in the dark, a mob that shouldn't be there. Darkness is the mood, but contrast is what keeps it readable.
Put the threat in the background, partly hidden. The viewer's brain fills in the rest, which is scarier than showing the whole thing.
Keep your character lit from one side with a cold or red rim light. A fully dark thumbnail is just a black rectangle on a phone.
Hands up, leaning back, looking over a shoulder. Fear in the pose does more than the word "SCARY" in the title.
